When technology takes over, what jobs are left ?

Uber and Airbnb are just the latest in a line of companies that started as a crazy idea, but quickly trampled all over an entire industry. And just last week Ford announced that they will have a cheap driverless car in 5 years.

These changes are dazzlingly exciting for consumers of leisure travel, but the impact of automation on businesses looks likely to be even greater. When technology threatens to destroy jobs at such a fast pace, what skills should the travel industry be hiring ?

Tour operators usually favour staff based on their travel and not their technology skills, but does that now need a re-think ?

Should you hire people already armed with the right skills, or people who have a flexible approach?

Many expensive technical skills may be overtaken by automation, so is creativity, which software can’t replace, a better attribute ?

This session, chaired by Tigerbay MD Carl Morgan, and including travel technology industry experts, will discuss how technology affects the resource requirements within traditional travel businesses and how automation will impact on career choices of future generations.

Go Global Faster

Going global can be a daunting prospect. Not only is it a significant challenge to localise content for each language market, but you also need to accommodate cultural sensitivities, expectations and preferences. As increasingly more travel content is consumed on personal devices, you must now consider not just the language of the information, but also its relevancy for the individual. There is simply no way to go global today using the traditional processes of content creation and translation, let alone do it with the necessary speed. In this workshop you’ll hear how technology can replace many labour-intensive processes, hence accelerating time to market and reducing costs. You will also learn about a few emerging technologies that will ultimately make it possible to not just ‘go global faster’ but actually go global instantly.

The workshop will be presented by Kevin Ashbridge, 17-year travel industry veteran and Travel Account Director at SDL.

Insights from one billion bookings - Summer trading, key trends, and people-centric marketing

In this final session of the morning before coffee our Summit headline sponsor Criteo will present up to date market insight having produced its latest report on the travel market.

As the leading performance marketing technology provider Criteo works with many of the biggest travel firms, converting lookers into bookers with a personalised and unified experience across all channels and screens.

So how has the travel sector fared this year? What are the biggest trends the data indicates are driving the market? And how are personal mobile devices changing customer behaviour? All these questions and more will be answered.

During the session Criteo will discuss its findings with some leading travel brands who are making waves in the travel sector.

The secrets behind successful internationalisation

This mainstage session will focus on the critical issue for so many travel firms of how to successfully expand in overseas markets.

There are no physical boundaries on the web, however, there are many barriers and challenges to internationalising your businesses whether that’s to do with regulation, payments, translations or simply geographical distance.

However, for firms that succeed in finding growth abroad the potential advantages are huge. This session will be led by Travelzoo EMEA president Richard Singer, who will present a case study of best practice.

Afterwards our panel of experts will discuss the key themes the session throws up.

Richard Singer , President , Travelzoo
Michael Buller , Chairman , Verband Internet Reisevertrieb e.V. (VIR)
Frédéric Vanhoutte , President , Eventiz
Jim Brigden , Managing Director, EMEA , Sojern
Mike Carlo , Global Head of Travel Payments , Transpay
The Innovators - Start-Up Pitches

The three firms that are pitching are Distribusion, a German bus/coach aggregator, Flio, a mobile app to help people navigate airports, and Fastpayhotels, former Lowcost Alex Gisbert’s new venture which is a beds supplier that pay hoteliers immediately to unlock best rates and availability.

Stop them browsing, get them booking - a how to guide for travel

2.2% of visits convert to sale in the travel & hospitality sector. As even the tiniest increase in conversion rate can result in a significant revenue increase, a focus on conversion rate optimisation (CRO) makes massive financial sense.

This workshop presents recent advancements in technology, reveals why the smart money is on conversion (vs spiralling acquisition costs) as the future business growth driver and how travel brands can leverage this step-change.

Illustrated with case studies, you’ll discover how ‘CRO Automation’ - the powerful combination of machine learning, computational power and real-time management of big data sets - is a game changer for travel brands looking to achieve significant results at low cost.

Content Strategy: From data to brief

In this session we’ll demystify one of content marketers’ favourite words: strategy. First of all we’ll break that abstract term into practical, manageable parts, outlining the reports, research and documentation you should you be holding in your hands at the end of the process.

After that we’ll take a closer look at how some of those elements come together, and how they translate into content. Our head of strategy will take you though some simple data analysis techniques that will improve your thematic planning, and our chief editor will talk about folding everything into a solid brief. By the end, you’ll have a clearer idea of how to work with creatives to develop high-quality, commercially effective content.

Travolution@10 - The Digital Travel Masters

Ten years ago the impossible to ignore success of the online travel giants like Expedia and who emerged to challenge established players by exploiting new technologies prompted Travel Weekly to launch Travolution.

Was this an evolution or a revolution? Did they succeed in changing the travel industry out of all recognition? And what is their enduring impact to day, and what can we expect from disruptive new entrants in the future?

This year’s Summit will culminate with a keynote session in which we will try to answer some of those questions.

The session will be led by Travolution founder Simon Ferguson, now Travelport managing director for northern Europe, who will assess what has changed in the online travel sector over the decade we’ve been reporting on it against what the expectations were back in 2006.

He will also look at what he expects to change in the coming 10 years and, particularly, the impact he believes creative and entrepreneurial people with a disruptive spirit will have on travel as they look to bring their vision of the future to reality.

Simon will then introduce our esteemed panel of industry leaders, who have been at the cutting-edge of the evolution of the online travel sector during the last 10 years, for a top level discussion of the key issues and opportunities travel firms face in a digital world.
